Victim of green onion theft in Kyoto turns into a thief of green onions.

Prosecutors are pushing for jail time for a 28-year-old man charged with stealing 216 kilograms of Kujo negi—a tasty green onion from Kyoto. He swiped them from farmers between August 30 and September 1, netting around 190,000 yen (about $1,240). Not exactly a fortune, right? The guy was a farmer himself, trying to fulfill an unrealistic 800-kilo weekly order after poor yields this summer left him panicking about his clients.

In a twisted twist of logic, he thought stealing was his solution after falling victim to similar theft himself. But we all know two wrongs don’t make a right. Now he’s admitted to the charges and is hoping for mercy. His lawyer seeks a suspended sentence, arguing he'll repay the farmers—but the prosecution is asking for two years in prison when he's sentenced on December 19. Let's hope this breaks the cycle of green onion thievery for good.
