In 2024, Tokyo's net population inflow increased to 135,843, nearing pre-pandemic levels, while other prefectures showed varied trends.

The Tokyo metropolitan area saw its net population inflow jump to 135,843 in 2024, climbing by 9,328 from last year and nearing the pre-pandemic high of 148,783 in 2019. This area's inflow has been rising for three consecutive years now! The government plans to tackle this overconcentration issue by fiscal 2027.
Breaking it down, Tokyo itself attracted 79,285 newcomers in 2024, up 11,000 from 2023. While places like Kanagawa and Saitama also saw gains, 40 prefectures experienced outflows. Notably, Osaka's metro area finally reported a positive net inflow for the first time since 2014, capturing 2,679 new residents. Meanwhile, Nagoya faced a substantial outflow of 18,856. In total, 735,883 people moved to Japan while 371,615 left.
