Shinjuku Alta, a famous landmark and meeting spot in Tokyo, is closing permanently on February 28 after 40 years.

So long, Shinjuku Alta, and thank you for the countless meetups! You’ve been a Tokyo icon for over 40 years, but it’s time to say goodbye. Opening in 1979 right across from Shinjuku Station, you were the go-to place for trendy boutiques and youth culture. Don’t even get me started on Studio Alta! That spot made waves with the comedy show Waratte Iitomo for over three decades.
Your ground-floor entrance was the ultimate meeting point, just like Hachiko in Shibuya. But soon, that legacy will fade as you close your doors on February 28. Sure, you felt modern back in the day, but we’ve all seen how time doesn’t play favorites. Your cramped interior is a throwback, standing in the way of progress. Whatever takes your place better respect your history, or we’ll have some serious words!
