Sinkhole in Saitama traps truck driver.

A massive sinkhole swallowed a truck in Saitama on Tuesday morning, trapping a 74-year-old driver and sparking a huge rescue effort. This craziness went down around 9:50 a.m. in Yashio, with a chasm about 5 meters wide and 10 meters deep opening up just as the truck rolled in. Firefighters rushed in with cranes, trying to get the driver out as witnesses watched the ground collapse under him.

Things got even wilder when a nearby section of the road collapsed around 1 a.m. Wednesday—around 15 hours later. This led to utility poles sinking and restaurant signs crashing down, making the rescue even tougher. It's one of those wild days where you just shake your head and think, “Did that really just happen?”
