Shirase icebreaker arrives at Showa Station, Antarctica.

So check this out, the Japanese icebreaker Shirase just made it to Showa Station in Antarctica after a grueling 40-day journey. It docked about 120 meters from East Ongul Island at 9:44 a.m. local time. The ship left Japan back on November 20 and brought crucial supplies for the base.

Once it landed, they started moving goods and fuel using snowmobiles right away. Some members of the 66th Antarctic research expedition had already touched down by helicopter three days earlier and were there to greet the Shirase. Ko Morita, who's 36, said, "I was relieved to see the Shirase reach the base safely," and he’s hoping for smooth sailing with transport and observations from here on out.
