In 2023, a record 3,568 people needed assistance on Japanese mountains, the highest number since 1961. The increase is partly due to more climbers returning to peaks like Mt. Fuji after COVID-19 restrictions eased. Notably, 335 climbers died or remain missing, and 1,400 were injured. Incidents on Mt. Fuji surged by 90%, and Mt. Takao saw a 68% rise.

Authorities urge climbers to be well-prepared and submit climbing registration forms for safety.
