Japan's vegetable prices are rising.
Vegetable and rice prices in Japan are surging due to bad weather and rising production costs, impacting consumer expenses.

Prices of vegetables and rice in Japan are skyrocketing thanks to bad weather and rising production costs. In January, fresh vegetable prices soared by 36% year on year, with cabbage and Chinese cabbage prices surging to about three and two times their usual cost. Rice prices jumped a whopping 70.9% for the fourth consecutive month, marking a record high. The lack of rain is driving vegetable prices up, and as cabbage costs remain high, demand for Chinese cabbage has shot up, reflected in a 55.7% price increase. Rice prices have been on the rise since last summer due to supply shortages, leading to higher costs for rice products like onigiri and sushi. To tackle this, the government is releasing stockpiled rice, but experts predict food prices will rise over 5% this year due to these ongoing spikes.
