In 2024, Japan's traffic deaths fell to 2,663, the third-lowest ever, with an increase in fatalities among seniors.
The traffic death toll in Japan for 2024 dropped by 15 to 2,663, making it the third-lowest ever. Tokyo led the stats with 146 deaths, followed by Aichi at 141 and Chiba at 131. On the flip side, Shimane had the fewest with 9, while Tottori and Kochi had 15 and 21 respectively.
Victims aged 65 and older saw a troubling rise, increasing by 47 to 1,513, which is 56.8% of the total deaths. Even though traffic accidents dropped overall by 17,138 to 290,792, Japan’s goal remains tough: getting the annual death toll below 2,000 by 2025.
