Japan's plum blossom season has arrived; after-dark garden is a top viewing location.

Japan is in the middle of plum blossom season, and let me tell you, ume flowers are stunning! They might not get as much love as cherry blossoms, but they bloom longer, giving you more chances to appreciate their beauty. One of the best spots to do this is Kairakuen, in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture. This garden is a sight to behold with around 3,000 ume trees showcasing over a hundred subspecies, creating a color palette that ranges from pure white to deep purple-pink.

Right now, Kairakuen is hosting a special nighttime event called Ume The Lights. It runs on weekends and holidays from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The garden gets lit up in a magical way, and even though it’s chilly, you’ll want to bundle up to soak it all in. Grab some delicious ume-themed snacks while you’re there, like plum-flavored steamed buns or even oshizuke to warm you up. Admission is just 500 yen. Don’t miss out—this event runs until March 9!
