Japan's English education is ineffective.
In Japan, intense focus on English exams creates dislike for the language, hindering students' international competitiveness and opportunities abroad.

Right now, kids in Japan are feeling the heat of entrance exams. The focus has shifted to testing their English skills, where they’re drowning in vocabulary and memorizing model sentences for exams. This approach is debatable. Instead of appreciating the beauty of a new language, many find themselves hating it. A 2021 poll showed that nearly one-third of elementary kids dislike learning English, an increase of 8% since 2013.
If Japan wants its kids to be globally competitive, it needs to offer more engaging language experiences that inspire them to embrace learning. The government has set a goal for half a million students to study abroad by 2033, but in 2022, only 58,000 took that leap. We've got to do better than that!
