Prime Minister Ishiba's budget may face rejection without more concessions to the Democratic Party for the People on tax allowances.

Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba is in hot water with his budget. The Democratic Party for the People (DPP) is pushing for a higher tax-free allowance of ¥1.78 million ($11,500), and they’re not backing down. DPP policy chief Makoto Hamaguchi states the current ruling coalition's offer isn’t enough, and he’s basically saying, “No way” to anything less without real commitments. Hamaguchi made it clear that even if the ruling party bumps the ceiling to ¥1.5 million, the DPP won’t play ball without talks on unwinding that gasoline tax. So, without some serious concessions, Ishiba’s budget is sitting on shaky ground.
