Hokkaido experiences power surge from data center growth in Japan.
Hokkaido's electricity demand is projected to grow rapidly due to new data centers and semiconductor plants, increasing energy security needs.

Listen up! Hokkaido's electric demand is about to skyrocket! They're planning to bring in some serious power-draining data centers and semiconductor plants. According to the OCCTO, they're expecting an average annual growth of 1.2% through 2034, which is quicker than Tokyo and the rest of Japan. Even with a shrinking population, it's clear Japan's energy needs are on the rise, and Hokkaido's stepping up to the plate.
Big names like Rapidus and SoftBank are betting on Hokkaido for their operations. That means the Tomari nuclear power plant is gonna be in the spotlight, especially since that safety review by the regulators is no joke—it might take years! And don’t forget about the push for renewable energy, like offshore wind projects. By fiscal 2034, Hokkaido’s electricity demand is set to hit around 31 terawatt hours, rising 12% from 2025. Tokyo's not sitting still either, planning to reach about 288 terawatt hours. It's gonna be a wild ride!
